Employee onboarding process for Gemstone Stores: A First Month for Advisers Who Know Little About Stones
Many gemstone advisers join with no background in stones. A planned first month turns a polite newcomer into someone who can describe a stone, handle it safely and speak to a worried buyer.

The usual start is a seat near the counter and a hope that the new person picks things up. The owner is busy with customers, the expert is not always there, and the newcomer learns the stone names from the labels. Within weeks they are answering customers with half-knowledge, and the store pays in returned pieces and lost trust.
A month with a clear order fixes this. Handling and records first, because they protect the store. Then the main stones, a few at a time, then listening to customers, then speaking to them with the owner beside. Each week ends with a short check so both sides know where things stand.
How to set it up
1. Week one: handling and records
Teach how stones are taken out, shown on the tray, returned and counted at close. Show where the register is and how entries are made. The newcomer practises with low-value samples.
2. Week two: the main stones
Learn six to eight stones the store sells most: names, appearance, common treatments in plain words and the questions customers ask. Use the knowledge sheet and a daily test of one stone.
3. Week three: listening
Sit beside an adviser for conversations. Note how they open, ask questions and close. Discuss afterwards what the customer wanted and what was offered.
4. Week four: speaking with support
Take part in simple enquiries with the owner or senior adviser close by. Agree beforehand when to hand over a customer.
5. End of month review
Go through the checks, the register entries, the stones learnt and a short conversation about how the newcomer feels. Set the next month's stones. Link with the HR documentation process to place the signed note on file.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask the last new joiner what they were taught in week one and compare with your plan.
- Check whether the newcomer made register entries under supervision.
- See how many stones the newcomer could describe at the end of the month.
- Ask whether the newcomer ever answered a customer alone before being ready.

Questions owners ask
Six to eight of the main ones is realistic, with more added over the next months. Depth on a few is better than a shallow list of many.
A named adviser who explains well, with the expert or owner stepping in for the harder points. Free their time at the start so teaching is not squeezed out by customers.
Talk to them in week three, not week six. Find out whether it is the material, the teaching or the person, and change one thing. Record the conversation and the agreed steps.
