Attendance, shift and leave process for SCADA Systems Companies: windows, shifts and night support
Commissioning often falls in a fixed plant shutdown, and support runs round the clock. Attendance rules must cover both without wearing people out.

A shutdown window cannot move. Engineers work long shifts in a control room for days, then return to a full inbox. Support calls arrive at night, and the same few answer them because they know the system. Leave requests clash with shutdown dates, and the people carrying the most hours feel the least recognised.
A workable pattern marks shutdown windows early, assigns teams with a rest rule afterwards and keeps a published on-call rota with equal turns and a day off after a bad night. Leave is approved against the calendar of windows. Hours worked in commissioning are recorded, so the owner sees where the load lies.
How to set it up
1. Calendar the windows
List customer shutdown dates and go-live deadlines for the year. Share the calendar with all engineers so leave is planned around it.
2. Set commissioning shift rules
Agree maximum hours per shift, breaks and rest after the window. Record who worked how long. Our attendance, shift and leave process work covers this.
3. Publish the on-call rota
Rotate weekly with a named backup. Agree what counts as urgent and what time off follows a call. Share the rota a month ahead.
4. Record hours and calls
Keep a simple sheet of commissioning hours and on-call calls by person. Review monthly to catch uneven load.
5. Plan leave around windows
Allow free leave in quiet months and ask for longer notice before shutdown seasons. Approve every request against the calendar.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Longest continuous shift worked by any engineer last window
- Number of on-call turns per engineer in the last quarter
- Calls received after midnight last month
- Leave refused for clashing with a shutdown window

Questions owners ask
Most firms find a fixed allowance plus time off after night calls works. Decide the rule once and apply it to all, so nobody feels favoured.
Plan shift teams in advance, use handover between shifts and agree a daily maximum with the customer. Tired engineers make errors in a live control room.
Often yes, if the customer allows secure remote access. It cuts travel, but the rota and rest rules still apply, since late-night work remains work.
