Compensation benchmarking for Patient attendant services: fair duty rates for long and hard shifts
Attendants move to whoever pays a little more or on time. Knowing what nearby services offer helps you set rates you can defend and afford.

Share your requirementsWhy compensation benchmarking matters in patient attendant services
Duty rates in this trade are set by habit and rumour. An owner hears that a competitor has raised night pay and follows without knowing the facts. Attendants hear a different story and ask for more. Heavy cases, such as a bed-ridden or confused patient, are paid the same as light ones, so attendants avoid them and families wait longer.
Benchmarking here is simple. Gather what nearby services pay for day, night, heavy and short-notice duties, how quickly they pay and what extras they offer. Compare with your own rates and your own costs. Decide where you want to stand, and explain your structure to attendants.
How to set it up
1. List the duty types you place
Day, night, heavy care, short notice, home and hospital. Each may need its own rate.
2. Gather what others pay
Ask attendants who have worked elsewhere, coordinators, hospital contacts and neighbouring services. Note rates, payment dates and extras, and how reliable each source is.
3. Compare with your own structure
Place your rates beside the others. Look at where you are well below, where you are well above and where the gap matters.
4. Decide your position and your rule
Choose where to stand for each duty type and write the rule for heavy cases and short notice. Check against what families will pay.
5. Tell attendants and review each year
Share the rates in writing, explain heavy case pay, and review once a year or when you hear of a shift in the market.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Write down your present rates for each type of duty.
- Ask five attendants what they heard about rates at other services.
- Check how long it takes you to pay compared with others.
- See which duties are hard to fill and whether the rate is the cause.

Questions owners ask
Many services pay a higher rate, since night is tiring and harder to fill. Decide a difference you can afford, ask attendants what would make nights fair and compare with nearby services.
Ask attendants who worked elsewhere, talk to hospital contacts and share information with other owners where comfortable. No single source is complete, so compare several.
Often it matters just as much. Attendants with no savings need dues on a known date. A slightly lower rate paid reliably can keep staff better than a higher rate paid late.
