Attendance, shift and leave process for Grocery retailers: rotas for tills, counters and festival weeks
A grocery shop opens early and closes late, and every till needs a person. Attendance and leave must be planned by branch, because one missing cashier shows up as a queue.

Most grocery owners run the roster from memory or a phone group. A cashier asks for a day off, a stocker swaps with a friend, and the manager learns about it in the morning. Weekly offs drift, and the same people end up working the Sundays and the festival eves.
A written pattern removes most of this. It names the opening and closing shift, who is off on which day, who covers the tills and what happens when someone falls sick. It also gives the owner a record for overtime, late arrivals and half days, so month-end talks about days worked become short.
How to set it up
1. Map the shifts of one branch
Write the opening, middle and closing shifts, with the minimum number at billing, the loose counter and receiving. Do one branch first and copy the pattern to others.
2. Fix weekly offs by rotation
Give each person a named weekly off for the month, displayed in the back room. Swaps need the manager to approve so cover is never missing at a till.
3. Record attendance the same way everywhere
Choose one method for every branch and write down what counts as late, half day and absent. Make the register the only source for month-end.
4. Plan the festival and holiday weeks
List the weeks that need extra hands. Decide overtime, compensatory days and who may take leave, and share the plan a month ahead.
5. Review gaps every month
Count the shifts that ran short, by branch and by day. Use this with the area supervisor to adjust the pattern and the number of floaters.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count the days last month when a branch had only one cashier at evening peak.
- Ask three staff whether they know their weekly off two weeks ahead.
- Compare the attendance register with what was actually paid for one branch.
- List the last festival week and who worked overtime in it.

Questions owners ask
Use the same rules and register, but let the hours follow each branch footfall. A shop near an office park needs a different mid-day cover from one in a residential lane.
Keep one trained floater or a nearby branch person who can cover, and agree who calls whom. A written plan is faster than a morning of phone calls.
Yes, if the manager approves and cover at the tills stays intact. Record the swap, so the register matches what happened.
