Attendance, shift and leave process for Floriculture businesses: pre-dawn picking and festival week rosters

Flowers are cut before the sun is high and must reach the market the same day. A reliable shift pattern and a clear festival roster decide whether the truck leaves full or the crop is wasted.

Why attendance, shift and leave process matters in floriculture businesses

A flower business has two rhythms. The ordinary day starts before dawn with picking and ends mid-afternoon with dispatch. The festival week starts earlier, ends later and needs twice the hands. Without a plan, the farm calls people on the day, some come, some do not, and the manager decides under pressure who stays late.

A clear pattern removes most of the stress. A standard early shift with fixed start, break and end times. A festival roster published weeks ahead, naming who works which hours. Leave rules that close the doors in festival weeks and open them in the quiet months. Travel and safety arrangements for early arrivals, particularly for women crews.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Set the standard day

Write the start, break and end time for pickers, sorters, bunchers and dispatch. Share it in the local language and keep it steady.

  2. 2. Plan the festival roster

List the festival and wedding dates for the year, with expected crew size, and build rosters for those weeks four to six weeks ahead.

  3. 3. Agree leave windows

Close leave in the festival weeks and encourage it in quiet months, so people can plan family events.

  4. 4. Arrange travel and meeting points

Fix pick-up points, timings and safe waiting areas. Ask the crew whether the plan works for them.

  5. 5. Record attendance at the start

The crew leader notes who is present at the first picking, and the manager sees the sheet before sorting begins.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Look at attendance for the last three festival weeks.
  • Count how many people left late without notice.
  • Ask pickers what time they leave home and how.
  • Check if leave was granted during the last festival week.
