Almost always promoted from senior faculty, sometimes hired from outside with administrative experience. Promote on how they manage colleagues, not only on subject strength. At selection, ask how they would resolve a clash over workload and what they do for a weak result.

Training path
First weeks
- 1
Role expectations
The principal explains the HoD's duties, authority and reporting lines. The new HoD writes a one-page list of responsibilities and the principal confirms it.
- 2
Records and timetable
The outgoing HoD or office hands over files, timetable and committee roles. The new HoD walks through each with the office superintendent.
- 3
Meeting basics
The principal coaches on running department meetings with agenda and minutes. The HoD runs the first meeting with the principal observing.
First year
- 1
Observing and giving feedback
The HoD learns to observe a class and give two clear points of feedback. A senior HoD or principal watches the first few feedback talks.
- 2
Workload and fairness
The HoD makes a workload sheet for the department and discusses balance with the principal. Complaints are tracked and reviewed.
- 3
Result review
The HoD analyses results subject-wise with attention to starting levels. A written action plan is checked after the next test.
Towards senior
- 1
Developing faculty
The HoD plans growth paths for each member, including courses and mentoring. The principal reviews the plan and follow-up.
- 2
Handling conflict and discipline
HR or the principal coaches fair hearing and recording. The HoD handles a supervised case and confirms legal matters with your adviser.
- 3
Accreditation and planning
The HoD leads preparation of department files and a multi-year plan. The quality cell reviews quality and completeness.
Performance review
A termly conversation with the principal, a yearly written review with feedback from faculty and staff, and a check after results or any department conflict.

Questions to ask in the review
- How is your department's workload shared?
- Which faculty member needs most support?
- How do you give feedback after observation?
- Which result worries you, and what is the plan?
- What conflict did you handle?
- What do you need from the principal?
- Where do you spend time that could be delegated?
- What are the department's plans for the next year?
Pitfalls
- Appointing the best researcher as HoD with no leadership training
- Giving the HoD responsibility but no authority over timetable or duties
- Never asking faculty for feedback about the HoD
- Rating only on department results
Questions about this role
Rotation can build leadership and avoid stagnation. Whatever the policy, brief and train each HoD and record the expected duties.
Give a clear duty list, a mentor, an early meeting with the principal and a short checklist for observation, workload and results. Review after the first term.
Use class observation facts, hold the talk in private and involve the principal if needed. Keep records and focus on student impact.
