Learning and development process for Roofing Material Makers: profile changes, cut lists and roof skills
A roofing plant has three learning gaps: roll set-up, reading rushed length lists, and working on a roof. Short sessions on the job close each of them.

Profile changes depend on one or two fitters who learned them over years. Order desk staff copy length lists from phone calls and the operator cuts what is written. Installers learn by following another installer. A cut-length error wastes material and a poor fixing causes a leak, and each one traces to something that could have been taught in a short session.
A good learning process picks the three skills that matter most. Set-up fitters write down each profile change as a card and teach a second person. The order desk and operators practise reading and confirming a length list with a repeat-back habit. Installers learn fixing, sealing and safe movement on a practice roof or a low shed before real jobs. Each learner is signed off on a simple task before working alone.
How to set it up
1. Pick three skills
Usually profile change, reading a length list, and roof fixing. Choose from your own errors and complaints.
2. Write the profile change card
Ask the fitter to do a change while a helper notes the steps. Turn it into a card at the line. Have the helper do the next change under watch.
3. Teach the repeat-back habit
The order desk and operator practise reading the list back before cutting. See learning and development. Test it on a rushed day.
4. Practise roof skills low down
Use a low shed or a practice frame for fixing, sealing and moving safely. Check each installer before they go up on a real roof.
5. Sign off and record
A lead watches the learner do the task alone, and signs. Keep the list of who can do what on the wall.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask your set-up fitter who is learning a profile change.
- Look at the last three cut-length errors and see whether a repeat-back was used.
- Count installers signed off on fixing and sealing.
- List the training sessions held in the last six months.

Questions owners ask
Teach a repeat-back habit between the order desk and the operator, and check the first sheet against the list. Practise it on busy days, as that is when errors happen.
Have the expert do it while a learner times and notes each step, then write a card. The learner repeats the change under watch, then alone. Move to the next profile only after the first is steady.
Yes, a short practical session on fixing, sealing and moving safely, then a supervised first job. A low shed or frame is enough for the practice. It protects the person and the customer's roof.
