Health, safety and wellbeing for Cement Product Makers: lifting, dust, sun and the open yard

Cement yards carry heavy lifting, dust and weather. A routine for hoists, masks, gloves and water protects backs and lungs and keeps experienced hands.

Why health, safety and wellbeing matters in cement product makers

Workers lift moulds and products by hand, mix near dust, and work in sun and rain. Masks and gloves are issued once and lost. Lifting aids are used when the supervisor is looking. Back and hand injuries build up slowly, and people leave with pain, taking their skill with them. Small cuts are ignored until they become serious.

Good looks like a routine that sets rules for hoists and manual lifting, issues and replaces masks and gloves, provides water and shade, and logs injuries and near misses. Supervisors check gear at the start of a shift. Workers help to set the rules, since they know which tasks hurt most.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Walk the yard with a supervisor

Note lifting, dust and weather risks at batching, moulding, demoulding, curing and loading. Ask workers what hurts.

  2. 2. Set lifting rules

Write which products need a hoist or two people, and keep the hoist working. See health, safety and wellbeing.

  3. 3. Issue and check gear

Masks and gloves are issued to each person, replaced when worn and checked at the start of a shift. Use real orders from this month, not examples.

  4. 4. Add water, shade and rest

Provide water close by, shade for breaks and a short rest rule in hot weather. Keep the wording plain so a new joiner can follow it.

  5. 5. Log injuries and near misses

Keep a simple sheet and read it monthly with supervisors to find patterns. Keep it on one sheet where the supervisor can reach it.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Check which workers have been issued masks and gloves and who actually wears them.
  • Count injuries and near misses written down in the last quarter.
  • List the products that are lifted by hand and their weight if known.
  • Ask workers which task leaves them most tired.
