Employee onboarding process for Paediatric Clinics: settling in nurses and desk staff
A new nurse or receptionist meets frightened parents on the first day. A simple first-week plan means they learn the clinic's ways before the evening rush, not during it.

Share your requirementsWhy employee onboarding process matters in paediatric clinics
Most paediatric clinics onboard by letting the new person shadow whoever is free. The nurse learns infant handling by watching one colleague and the receptionist learns the token system by getting it wrong. Parents notice at once, and the senior staff end up fixing mistakes in the middle of a busy clinic.
A planned first week is short and specific. It names who the new person sits beside, what they practise each day, what they must not do alone yet, and who they ask. By Friday the clinic knows if the person is settling, and the new joiner knows what is expected.
How to set it up
1. Prepare the joining day
Papers, uniform, a locker and a named buddy ready before arrival. A tour of the waiting area, consultation rooms, vaccination room and storage, with the rules for each.
2. Teach the parent conversation
Use a one-page script on greeting, explaining waiting time and passing worries to a nurse. Let the new joiner watch three conversations and then try one with the buddy listening.
3. Build nursing skills in a set order
Weighing and measuring, preparing the vaccination tray, comforting a child, then helping with injections. The senior nurse signs each step after watching it done.
4. Teach desk systems on quiet hours
Tokens, appointment slots, billing and records, practised in the afternoon lull and not during the evening queue. The attendance and shift process helps plan this time.
5. Hold a review at day five and day thirty
The clinic manager and buddy ask what went well and what confused the person. Note any gaps in training and adjust the next joiner's plan.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask the last two joiners what they wished they had been told on day one.
- See whether a new nurse has handled an injection room alone within the first week.
- Check that joining papers and registrations are filed before the first clinic day.
- Look at how many joiners left within three months and what they said.

Questions owners ask
A focused first week and a check at day thirty is a sensible start. A nurse may need longer before working alone in the vaccination room. Let the senior nurse decide readiness task by task.
Pick someone patient who does the work well and has time. Avoid assigning the busiest person. Give the buddy a small recognition, as the role takes effort from their own day.
Practise the script together, let them observe a calm colleague and give feedback after each shift. Some people need a few weeks. If problems continue, discuss a role that suits them better.
