Manager development programme for Outsourced CFO providers: from finance manager to CFO lead
Your next CFO lead probably works for you today as a finance manager. A development programme gives that person the client exposure and leadership practice they need before they run accounts alone.

Finance managers in these firms are strong with numbers. They build the model, reconcile the cash flow and answer the founder's questions. What they have not done is hold a board room, push back on a client's plan or manage analysts across several accounts. Lateral hiring fills the gap, but at a cost.
A programme builds those missing pieces over a year. Each manager takes on staged client responsibility with a senior sponsor, practises leadership skills in short sessions and receives regular coaching. The firm learns who is ready, and the manager learns what the role truly involves.
How to set it up
1. Select a small group
Choose two to four managers with potential and discuss with each what they want from the role.
2. Set a staged path
Observe a client board, lead part of a review, own a small client with a sponsor, then own a full account.
3. Hold monthly leadership sessions
Short sessions on delegating, giving feedback, handling a difficult founder and managing time across clients. Use live cases.
4. Assign a sponsor and a coach
A CFO lead who guides client work and a separate person for personal development. Meet at least once a month.
5. Assess readiness at six and twelve months
Review client feedback, team feedback and the manager's own view, then decide on promotion. Record in the employee information file.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- List which managers have attended a client board meeting.
- Ask a manager what they would find hardest about running a client alone.
- See whether every manager has a named sponsor.
- Check how long it took your last internal lead to be ready.

Questions owners ask
About a year, with stages every few months. Shorter programmes give knowledge but not practice, and longer ones lose momentum.
Yes. Explain that it is development with a possible path and not a promise of promotion, and invite their own goals so the plan fits what they want.
Give specific feedback and a plan for what to build, or discuss a different growth route such as a specialist role. Be open about it.
