Employee onboarding process for Structural consultants: a first six months for graduates and experienced hires
A new engineer joins mid-job and is asked to produce drawings quickly. A planned first six months, with reviewed work and early site time, makes the person safe sooner and more likely to stay.

Share your requirementsWhy employee onboarding process matters in structural consultants
Structural firms tend to onboard by dropping the new engineer into a live job. The graduate is given a section of a frame, a software licence and a deadline. Questions are asked when the senior has time, which may be late. The experienced hire is assumed to know your methods, and errors appear in different standards of drawing.
A planned onboarding sets out the first weeks: software and templates, house standards for drawings and calculations, a buddy, the first small piece of a live job and a review session each week. It adds an early site visit, so the engineer sees how drawings are used. At the end of three and six months there is a clear conversation on how things are going.
How to set it up
1. Prepare before day one
Software access, templates, house standards and a first reading pack ready in advance. A new engineer who waits for a licence in week one is already doubtful.
2. Assign a buddy and a senior
The buddy answers daily questions, while the senior reviews work weekly. Name both on day one.
3. Give a first piece with a clear limit
A defined part of a live job, with a stated sign-off limit and a checker. Raise the limit as confidence grows.
4. Take them to site early
Within the first two months, let the new engineer attend a site visit or a pour. It teaches what the drawing is for.
5. Hold review conversations
At three and six months, discuss progress against the ladder and set the next steps. The employee onboarding process page describes the structure.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask your latest hire what they wished they had known in week one.
- Check that software and templates were ready on the day they joined.
- See when the newest graduate was first taken to a site.
- Find out whether a three-month conversation took place.

Questions owners ask
They need a shorter version that still covers house standards, software templates and sign-off limits. Assumed knowledge is where mismatches begin.
Someone a grade or two ahead, patient and good at explaining. Allow time in their plan, or buddying becomes a favour that gets dropped.
When the person can work within their grade limits with normal checking, and the review conversations show progress. Confirm the contract terms with a qualified professional.
