A hiring process for electronics and mobile retail that finds people who stay

A hiring process for mobile shops, laptop stores and appliance showrooms that tests product talk, billing accuracy and customer manner, and tracks who stays past the first target month.

In brief

  • Test a candidate on a demo-wall pitch, an EMI quote and a billing entry, not only on how they speak.
  • Be open about the target cycle, incentive slabs and festival-month hours before making any offer.
  • Role sheets differ for sales executives, billing staff, delivery and installation technicians and the store manager.
  • Track source against the month-three headcount, then recruit more from the doors that hold people.

Two days before the launch-week offer on flagship handsets, the shutter is half up. A mobile store has lost its two best sales executives to a showroom across the road. The owner hires a cousin's friend with no retail record, hands him a demo unit and watches him tell a customer that an IMEI mismatch is nothing to worry about. The customer walks out. The shop paid a salary and bought a complaint.

Electronics and mobile retail depends on product knowledge, honest billing and patience with finance forms. The hiring process should test exactly these. This guide covers the sequence and the signs of staying power. If you want help running it, see recruitment process consulting.

Draw one role sheet for each post

  • Sales executive. Handset or laptop range, accessory attach, extended warranty pitch, exchange valuation, finance approval, daily sales target.
  • Billing and cash desk. Invoice with IMEI or serial number, tax invoice details, EMI file check, card swipe and UPI reconciliation, cash-up.
  • Store manager. Opening and closing checks, stock audit, brand promoter coordination, incentive statement, demo-unit register.
  • Delivery and installation technician. AC, washing machine, television wall-mount or CCTV camera fitting; tools, ladder safety, customer signature on the job card.
  • Service desk and returns. Open-box handling, warranty claims with brand service centres, follow-up on repair status.

Be plain about the target cycle

Targets decide stays and exits in this trade. A new hire should hear about the month-end push, the slabs for incentives, the treatment of returns and the hours in festival fortnights before accepting. A candidate who has worked with an EMI-heavy pattern knows what a rejected finance file does to the day. A fresher needs the numbers explained twice.

A hiring sequence that works

  1. 1

    Screen by phone

Ask the commute, earlier sales or counter work, comfort with Saturday and Sunday duty, and expected take-home including incentive.

  2. 2

    Run a product-talk round

Give a customer brief: budget, usage, a rival handset in hand. The candidate recommends two options and states one honest drawback of each.

  3. 3

    Run a billing round

Enter a mock sale with IMEI, accessory, exchange and card payment. Watch for a correct total, a careful serial scan and a calm correction after a deliberate mistake.

  4. 4

    Run a complaint round

Ask the candidate to face a customer who returns after a week with a screen complaint. Listen for the warranty facts and the empathy.

  5. 5

    Offer in writing

Include base pay, incentive slab rules, weekly off pattern, probation period and the training week.

  6. 6

    Plan week one

Name a buddy, schedule demo-wall practice, a billing workshop and a brand product session.

What each round should reveal

  • Honest recommendation over upselling the priciest model.
  • Neat keying of IMEI and serial numbers, since a wrong digit becomes a warranty dispute later.
  • Comfort explaining RAM, storage, refresh rate, inverter compressor or camera resolution in simple terms.
  • Stability under pressure from a queue at the cash desk during an offer weekend.

Where counter staff slip in this trade

Three slips cost more than any slow month. The first is a loose finance file: a wrong Aadhaar-linked mobile number or a missing cheque leaf delays EMI approval, and the customer drifts to the next shop. The second is a mismatched IMEI on the invoice, which later blocks a warranty claim. The third is a pitch that hides the real price of the extended warranty, tempered glass or back cover, then sours the customer at pickup. Train against these three slips on day two, using real invoices with names blanked.

Technicians have their own slip points: a wall-mount drilled into a pipe run, a split AC fitted without a drain slope, a CCTV camera aimed at glare, a DVR left with the factory password. A hiring trial for installers should include a ladder check, a spirit-level job on a test board and a customer-handover script.

Sources worth testing

  • Staff referrals, usually from the counter team and the technicians.
  • Nearby polytechnic and ITI batches for installation and repair roles.
  • College placement cells for trainee sales executives in June and July.
  • Customers who were impressed by a salesperson at a rival shop and asked about openings.
  • Ex-staff who left cleanly and now wish to return after a year at a rival chain.

Keep a joining register with a source column and a ninety-day status. Mobile retail has high churn near festival launches and flagship phone drops, so check the register after Diwali and after the new-model season.

Keep them past the first target month

Exits spike after the first incentive statement. Show the maths clearly, with a worked sample, and explain how returns and finance rejections affect the number. Seat the newcomer beside a senior executive on the first two weekends, when footfall teaches fastest. Hold a short review on day fifteen, day forty-five and day ninety.

More on role detail sits on the mobile store HR page and the appliance showroom induction page give more role detail, while the electronics retail hub lists every store type. To tell us what your showrooms need, fill the requirements form.

Questions we are asked

Use a customer brief with budget, usage and a competing model, then ask for two recommendations with one weakness each. Freshers can be given a one-page spec sheet fifteen minutes before the round.
