FMCG and consumer goods

Territory Sales Officer job description

A Territory Sales Officer grows packaged consumer goods sales in an assigned area by managing distributors, beat plans and retail outlets. FMCG brands need this role to turn distribution into steady shelf presence.

An HR consultant and business owner reviewing employee records together

Why the role exists

The Territory Sales Officer owns sales for one town or cluster of towns. The person works with the distributor, the distributor's salesmen and the retailers, and reports to an Area Sales Manager. The role keeps stock moving from the distributor to the shop and keeps the brand visible on shelves.

What the person does

  • Plan the monthly beat and visit distributors, wholesalers and retail outlets in the territory on the agreed days.
  • Review distributor stock and secondary sales each week, and raise orders before fast-moving packs run out.
  • Work with the distributor's salesmen on their daily outlet routes, order taking and new outlet opening.
  • Track coverage, billing outlets and numeric distribution in the sales app, and act on gaps by area.
  • Set up brand displays, price lists and promotional schemes at outlets, and check that schemes are passed on to retailers.
  • Follow up distributor payments and claims with the distributor and the finance team, and flag long overdue balances.
  • Collect market information on competitor schemes, pricing and new launches, and share it with the Area Sales Manager.
  • Submit daily visit reports, expense claims and monthly territory reviews on time using the company app.

Skills and tools

  • Beat planning and outlet coverage across mixed urban and rural routes
  • Distributor management and stock norms for fast-moving packs
  • Working knowledge of secondary sales, schemes and claim settlement
  • Retail negotiation and basic merchandising at kirana and modern trade outlets
  • Sales force app and distributor management system use
  • Excel for stock, sales and coverage reports
  • Clear spoken communication in the local language and Hindi or English
  • Safe two-wheeler travel and self-managed daily routines

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • Graduate in any stream preferred, or equivalent field sales experience in packaged goods.
  • Prior experience as a sales officer or senior salesman in an FMCG or similar fast-moving trade is preferred.
  • Comfort with a smartphone sales app and a two-wheeler licence are useful for daily travel.
  • Management diploma is a plus but not required for candidates with proven territory results.

How the work is judged

  • Secondary sales growth against the territory plan set by the company
  • Outlet coverage and the number of active billing outlets in the territory
  • Distributor stock health, with fewer stock-outs and fewer expired or damaged packs
  • Scheme execution at outlets and quality of claims raised by the distributor
  • Timely reports, payment follow-up and accuracy of market information shared

Where the role can lead

  • Senior Territory Sales Officer with a larger or more complex territory.
  • Area Sales Manager responsible for several towns and a team of officers.
  • Moves into key account, modern trade or distributor development roles.

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. Your best-selling pack suddenly drops in half your outlets. How do you find the cause and respond?
  2. How do you plan a beat so that high value outlets are visited more often without losing small outlets?
  3. A distributor holds old stock and refuses to order new packs. What do you do?
  4. Describe how you opened new outlets in a territory. What worked and what did not?
  5. How do you check that a retailer scheme has actually reached the shop owner?
  6. Tell us how you handled a distributor who was late on payments but important for sales.

Hiring tips for this role

  • Test with a real territory case: ask for a beat plan, a distributor stock review and a scheme check, not only a sales pitch.
  • Do not hire on past sales volume alone. Ask what brand, market and distributor support sat behind the numbers.
  • Check that the candidate knows the local trade, language and wholesale markets of your territory before offering.
  • Be clear about travel, daily visit norms, app use and how expenses are paid, so the person does not leave within weeks.

Questions about hiring a territory sales officer

The officer manages sales in an assigned area. That means visiting distributors and outlets, checking stock, passing on schemes and tracking coverage. The aim is steady secondary sales and good shelf presence for the brand.
