Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- How would you chase members who have not renewed without annoying them?
- A senior member complains loudly at the desk about a delay. What do you do?
- Tell us how you would keep a database accurate when members change phone numbers often.
- The committee asks for a renewal report by tomorrow. How do you prepare it?
- A member asks for another member's contact details. How do you respond?
- Describe a time you handled a busy registration desk at an event.
Hiring tips for this role
- Hire for courtesy and records discipline. Members judge the whole body by how the desk treats them.
- Test with a short exercise on a messy member list. Ask the candidate to find duplicates and expired memberships.
- A common mistake is leaving the role without a clear rule on who can see member data. Agree privacy practice before the person starts.
- Ask how the candidate handled senior or influential members in earlier roles. The work needs tact more than speed.
