Field Installation Technician job description

A Field Installation Technician sets up broadband, fibre or telecom connections at customer premises and small sites. The role turns a sale into a working connection and shapes the customer's first impression.

An HR consultant and business owner reviewing employee records together

Why the role exists

Every new broadband or enterprise connection needs someone to visit the home or office, run the cable, fix the equipment and test it. The Field Installation Technician does this daily, reporting to a field supervisor or service manager. In Indian ISPs and telecom operators the role often covers many homes and offices a day in one city zone.

What the person does

  • Visit customer premises as per the installation schedule and confirm the connection details before starting work.
  • Lay and clip the drop cable from the pole or closure to the premises, keeping the route neat and safe.
  • Install and configure the ONT, router or CPE and test speed, signal and Wi-Fi coverage with the customer present.
  • Terminate and splice the drop fibre or fix connectors as per the standard set by the engineer.
  • Update the installation app with serial numbers, readings, photos and the customer's confirmation on completion.
  • Explain basic use of the router and how to reach support, in the language the customer is comfortable with.
  • Report faults found in the network, such as a weak signal at the pole, to the supervisor or NOC.
  • Manage and account for cables, routers and consumables issued, and return unused stock at the end of the day.

Skills and tools

  • Fibre drop cable laying, connector termination and basic splicing for FTTH installs
  • Configuring ONTs and routers, including Wi-Fi channel and password setup
  • Testing with a power meter, visual fault locator and a speed test tool
  • Using a field service app for job cards, photos and customer sign-off
  • Safe use of ladders, drills and hand tools at homes and offices
  • Polite and clear communication with customers, including those who are not technical
  • Time planning across several visits in a day, with travel by two-wheeler or on foot
  • Honest handling of stock and equipment serial numbers

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • Preferred: ITI, diploma in electronics or telecom, or equivalent field installation experience.
  • Preferred: prior work with an ISP, cable operator or telecom contractor on home or office installs.
  • A valid two-wheeler licence is useful where the territory needs travel; the employer sets the exact need.
  • Smartphone confidence for apps and photos is preferred; freshers with a willingness to learn may suit helper roles.

How the work is judged

  • Installations completed on the first visit without a repeat call
  • Customer feedback on behaviour, tidiness and explanation after the visit
  • Accuracy of the app record, including serial numbers, readings and photos
  • Stock accountability for cables, routers and consumables issued
  • Early-life faults reported within the first weeks of a new connection

Where the role can lead

  • Move to Senior Technician or Installation Team Lead managing a small crew.
  • Grow into Field Supervisor, Quality Auditor or Fault Repair Technician roles.
  • Progress to splicing, commissioning or customer-premises engineering work.

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. Walk us through your steps from reaching a customer's door to the final speed test.
  2. The signal at the customer's router is weak but the pole reading looks fine. What do you check?
  3. A customer asks you to run the cable in a way that looks unsafe. How do you respond?
  4. How do you plan a day with several installs when one visit runs long?
  5. Tell us about a difficult customer visit. What did you do and what happened?
  6. You find the stock of connectors short at the start of the day. What is your next step?

Hiring tips for this role

  • Check customer manner as closely as technical skill. A fast installer who is rude or leaves a mess will generate complaints and repeat visits.
  • Ask for a short practical test on connector termination or router setup. Candidates from cable TV work may need extra fibre training.
  • Be clear on daily targets, fuel or travel support and the territory. Vague terms are a common reason technicians leave in the first quarter.
  • Verify past field work through a former supervisor. Ask about stock losses and customer complaints, not only completed installs.

Questions about hiring a field installation technician

An installation technician sets up new connections. A repair technician fixes faults on existing ones. Some small ISPs combine both roles, so list the tasks you expect in the job description.
