Dealership Sales Consultant job description
A Dealership Sales Consultant helps buyers choose and purchase new or used vehicles at an automotive showroom. The role covers enquiries, test drives, finance and exchange options, booking and delivery.

Why the role exists
The sales consultant is the face of the dealership for a buyer who may spend a large part of household savings. In India the work includes walk-ins, phone and online leads, loan and exchange discussions and many follow-ups. The consultant works with the sales manager, finance desk, insurance and delivery teams.
What the person does
- Greet showroom visitors, understand their budget, family needs and use, and show suitable models.
- Follow up online, phone and walk-in enquiries daily and record each contact in the dealer CRM.
- Arrange test drives, explain features fairly and answer questions on mileage, service cost and variants.
- Explain finance, exchange of an old vehicle and accessories options, and coordinate with the finance and used vehicle teams.
- Prepare the quotation, take the booking and keep the customer informed about allotment and delivery dates.
- Work with the registration, insurance and accessories desks so the vehicle is delivered complete and on time.
- Present the vehicle at delivery, explain its features and introduce the customer to the service team.
- Join local campaigns, corporate visits and showroom events, and report competitor offers to the sales manager.
Skills and tools
- Product knowledge across the models, variants and accessories on sale
- Listening to buyers and matching needs to a suitable vehicle
- Use of a dealer CRM for lead follow-up and booking status
- Plain explanation of loans, exchange value and insurance, without overpromising
- Confident test drive handling and vehicle presentation
- Negotiation within the dealership's discount and approval limits
- Follow-up discipline over long buying cycles
- Fluency in English and local languages for showroom conversations
Education and experience
Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.
- Graduate in any stream preferred, or equivalent experience in showroom or field sales
- Prior experience selling cars, two-wheelers or other high-value consumer goods is useful
- Valid driving licence for test drives; confirm exact needs with your own adviser

- Conversion of enquiries and test drives into bookings
- Quality and timeliness of lead follow-up recorded in the CRM
- Customer feedback at delivery and after the first service
- Cooperation with finance, insurance and accessories desks to close each sale cleanly
Where the role can lead
- Senior Sales Consultant handling corporate and fleet buyers
- Team Leader or Sales Manager for a showroom
- Used vehicle, finance or regional sales role within a dealer group
Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- A buyer says a rival brand offers a lower price. How do you respond without cutting your price below your limit?
- Describe how you followed up an enquiry that took several weeks to become a booking.
- A customer wants a variant that is not in stock. How do you keep the sale alive?
- How do you explain the pros and cons of a loan option to a first-time car buyer?
- Walk me through the steps you take on the day of vehicle delivery.
- Which CRM or lead tools have you used, and how do you decide whom to call first each morning?
Hiring tips for this role
- Hire for follow-up discipline, not only charm. Ask to see how the candidate tracked leads before, and check that records were written daily.
- Run a showroom role play with a hesitant buyer, a budget limit and a rival offer. Watch if the candidate listens before talking about models.
- Check the candidate's honesty about discounts and promises. Verbal assurances that the dealership cannot honour create complaints at delivery.
- Match the experience to the segment. A two-wheeler seller, a premium car seller and a commercial vehicle seller deal with very different buyers.
Questions about hiring a dealership sales consultant
The consultant meets buyers, shows vehicles, arranges test drives, explains finance and exchange options, takes bookings and manages delivery. Daily follow-up of leads in the dealer CRM is a large part of the work.
Many dealerships combine a fixed part with an incentive linked to deliveries, but the structure is your decision. Set it in writing, keep targets fair and review them regularly with your own advisers.
They need to explain features, variants and running costs clearly. Deep repair knowledge is not needed, but a consultant who cannot answer simple product questions loses trust quickly.
