Competency and talent management for Adventure tourism companies: who can lead what
An owner needs to know, on a Tuesday in April, which leaders can take a grade three river group and which cannot. A simple skills map answers that.

Adventure companies often depend on the owner's memory. The owner knows that Ravi is steady on rivers and that Meera has led high-altitude groups. When the owner is away or the team grows, nobody else knows, and the wrong leader is assigned.
A competency map lists the activities and conditions the company runs, and marks each guide against them as learning, supervised or independent. It shows gaps such as only one person who can lead a particular trek. Imagine a booking for a trip only two people can lead, both away. The map shows the risk months earlier.
How to set it up
1. List the activities and conditions
Each trek, river grade, camp type and course, with the conditions that change difficulty.
2. Mark each guide
Learning, supervised or independent, based on senior sign-off and not on self-rating.
3. Spot the gaps
Find activities with only one or two independent leaders and plan who to train next.
4. Use the map for assignments
Check the map before assigning leaders to trips and for new product plans. See HR strategy for linking it to next season.
5. Review every season
Update after each season with new sign-offs, returning or departed crew and any change to the trips you plan to run next year.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask your owner or ops head to name who can lead each trip and compare with a senior's view.
- Count activities with only one independent leader.
- Check how recent each sign-off is, and whether the senior who gave it still works with the company.
- See whether the map is used when assigning leaders, or whether the owner still decides from memory.

Questions owners ask
Yes, even a simple table helps. It prevents last minute assignment of the wrong person to a trip and shows you whom to train next, before a gap turns into a cancelled booking.
A senior leader or trainer who has watched them work. Self-rating tends to run high or low depending on the person.
It shows people their next step and what they need to reach it, which is something many seasonal guides say they lack. A guide who can see the path is likelier to return for another season.
