Competency and talent management for Network Maintenance Providers: the right engineer for the right rack
A site visit is refused if the engineer lacks the right certificate. Knowing who can do what is a business need, not a record-keeping exercise.

Not sure what you need? Tell us about your business in six short steps and we will come to the first meeting prepared.

Equipment from several vendors may sit in one exchange, and each demands its own training. Certificates sit in individual files, some at the engineer's home. Nobody has a clear list of who holds which, and when a client asks, the answer takes a day. A lapsed certificate is found at the site gate.
A competency register fixes this. It lists engineers, equipment, certificate dates and tasks signed off by a senior. It shows where you have a single point of dependence, who is ready for the next level and which training to buy first.
How to set it up
1. List equipment and skills by contract
What each client's network contains and what an engineer must do on it.
2. Build the register
Name, equipment, certificate, expiry date and tasks signed. Keep one owner, updated monthly.
3. Plan renewals and training
Put dates in the calendar six months ahead, with costs and who covers the engineer's regular work meanwhile.
4. Spot single points of dependence
Where only one person can handle a type of equipment, plan a second. Pair learners with veterans.
5. Link to grades
A senior engineer with several certificates and coaching responsibility earns a higher grade. Discuss it through compensation benchmarking when it is time to review pay.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask for a list of engineers holding a certain vendor certificate and see how long it takes to produce.
- Count certificates expiring in the next six months.
- Find equipment types that only one engineer can handle.
- Check whether grades reflect skill or only length of service.

Questions owners ask
That is your policy to set. Some firms pay and ask for a stay-on period, others share costs. Write the rule down and apply it equally.
Some will leave. Agree stay-on terms before sponsoring, and also make the growth path attractive. Record what was learnt so the next person can be trained faster.
Look at online options, trainers who visit and pairing with a certified engineer on live work. Confirm with the client what proof of competence they accept.
