Recruitment process consulting for Toy shops: festival helpers who are patient with parents and children
A toy shop wins or loses its year in a few festival weeks. Hiring early, testing patience on the floor and calling back good helpers matters more than any advertisement.

Many toy shops hire in a hurry when Diwali or the holidays are close. The owner asks friends and neighbours, takes whoever is free and gives half a day of orientation. The new hires do not know the stock, forget to ask the child's age and cannot demonstrate a toy. After the season, most vanish, and the next year starts again with the same scramble.
A better process starts earlier and judges the right things. It writes what the floor and wrap roles require, tests patience and speed with a short role-play, uses past helpers and referrals, and states hours and pay plainly. For permanent staff it looks for steady manner and curiosity about products, which can be taught further. A short record of each hire and how they performed lets the shop call back the best next year.
How to set it up
1. Write the two or three role profiles
Floor and demo, billing, and gift wrap or packing. List the tasks, the hours and the manner expected for each, in plain words.
2. Start six weeks before the peak
Call past helpers first, ask staff for referrals, and approach students and homemakers living nearby. Fix the number you need by role.
3. Test with a role-play
Ask the candidate to help a parent choose for a five-year-old with a stated budget. Watch listening, patience and honesty about what they do not know.
4. Make the offer clear
Dates, daily hours, breaks, pay, and who they report to. The recruitment process consulting page sets out how we would help.
5. Record how each hire did
Note attendance, manner and skill at the end of the season, and keep a returner list in order of preference.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many of last year's festival helpers you can still call.
- Ask your best assistant which hires from the last two years were weak and why.
- Check how long before the peak you began hiring last time.
- Try the role-play yourself with a current staff member and see what it reveals.

Questions owners ask
Not always. Patience, a pleasant manner and quick learning matter more. Teach the stock and billing in a short briefing and pair the new person with a regular for the first days.
It can suit both sides, but the rules on employing young people are strict. Confirm age and conditions with a qualified professional before hiring anyone under the legal working age.
Give a role-play with a restless child and a parent who changes the budget twice. Note whether the candidate stays calm, keeps the parent informed and does not push a sale too hard.
