Attendance, shift and leave for Solar Panel Manufacturers: nights, attention and thin technical cover
A panel line runs through the night, when technicians are fewest and inspectors tire. Shift and leave planning decides whether nights are weak or steady.

Because the laminator and tester are costly to leave idle, panel plants run round the clock. Nights often carry fewer technicians and newer supervisors. Inspectors on repetitive visual work lose attention, and breaks are taken when the line allows. Leave is granted by whoever is asked, and the same people end up on nights. Handover notes are a line scribbled on a sheet, and the day team learns of a problem when rejections rise.
A good process fixes the roster ahead and spreads nights fairly. It names a technical contact for each night, sets break patterns for inspectors, such as a rotation across stations, and records leave in one place with a rule on how many from one station can be off. Shift handover has a short format with open issues, stoppages and settings changed. Absence is recorded the same day and the pattern is read monthly.
How to set it up
1. Fix the roster two weeks ahead
Display it and route changes through one person. Spread nights fairly, with limits on consecutive nights.
2. Name a technical contact for each night
Name who can clear the stringer and laminator on each shift. If none, plan cross-cover or an on-call arrangement.
3. Rotate inspectors
Set a rotation across stations and short breaks at fixed times. See attendance, shift and leave. Ask inspectors what makes the work tiring.
4. Standardise the handover
One page: open issues, stoppages, settings changed and what the next shift must watch. Read it aloud at the changeover.
5. Set leave rules
State how many from one station can be off, how far ahead to apply and how emergencies work. Record in one place.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Look at the last shift handover notes and see whether anything was missing.
- Check how many inspectors have done the same station for more than a month.
- Count nights with no technician able to clear a stringer or laminator stoppage.
- Compare absence by shift over the last quarter.

Questions owners ask
Rotate them across stations, set short breaks at fixed times and keep lighting and seating comfortable. Ask them what tires them most, because they know before any chart does.
Open issues, stoppages and what was done, settings changed and what to watch. Keep it to one page and read it aloud at changeover, so the incoming supervisor can ask questions.
Plan a named technician or an on-call arrangement, rotate technicians fairly and train a second person on common stoppages. Cover that depends on a phone call alone will fail on the worst night.
