Attendance, shift and leave process for Metal Stamping Units: shifts, volume targets and covering absence
Stamping runs to monthly schedules and long shifts. A clear attendance, shift and leave process keeps presses staffed without driving the same operators to exhaustion.

Customers order on a monthly schedule and the unit tries to meet it by extending shifts. The same operators accept extra hours, and fatigue builds late in the week. Absence is handled on the day, by moving someone from another press, which leaves that press short. Leave clusters after festivals and at month end, and nobody has planned for it.
A good process sets the shift pattern for the schedule and writes how extra hours are shared and capped. It lists which operators can run which presses, so cover is planned. Leave is booked against the schedule, with limits per press team. Absence is recorded on the same day, with the reason, and a pattern review is held monthly to spot trouble early.
How to set it up
1. Set shifts from the schedule
Match the shift pattern to the monthly schedule, with start, handover and break times. Show planned peak weeks in advance.
2. Cap and share extra hours
Write a limit on extra hours per person and a rotation for who is asked. Record hours so the rule can be checked.
3. Make a cover grid
List which operators can run which press and die set, so a sudden absence has a plan. See attendance, shift and leave for patterns.
4. Book leave against the schedule
Ask for leave early, check it against peak weeks and allow a limit per press team. Handle urgent leave with a simple rule.
5. Review absence monthly
Look at absence by press, day and reason. Speak early with those who show a pattern, and fix causes such as transport or health.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many presses ran short last month and the reason.
- List extra hours by person for the last four weeks.
- Check absence on the day after a festival or payday against other days.
- Ask operators which shifts leave them most tired.

Questions owners ask
It can be, if people feel they must come in sick to hit it. Make sure targets allow for normal absence and do not punish genuine leave.
Rotate on a regular pattern and give rest between changes. Some people prefer fixed shifts, so ask and agree what suits both sides.
Find out the cause first, such as transport or family. Then set a clear rule on reporting and follow up each time, kindly but firmly.
