Roles in security services

Security guard

Stands post at a gate, lobby, factory, society or site: checks people and vehicles, keeps registers, watches for threats and follows the post orders. Reports to the site supervisor and is on his own much of the shift.

Security supervisor

Supervises guards across one site or a cluster: checks posts, fills gaps, trains and counsels guards, and handles client concerns. Reports to the area manager or branch head and is the main face of the agency to the client.

Control room operator

Monitors CCTV, alarms and radio from a control room, logs events, directs guards to alerts and calls police, fire or management as per procedure. Reports to the control room in-charge and works long, quiet shifts that need sharp attention.

Night patrol guard

Patrols a site on foot or by vehicle through the night, checking doors, fences, lights and tell-tale points with a patrol clock or app. Reports unusual activity and calls help. Works alone in dark hours and reports to the night supervisor.

Relief guard and floater

Fills in at different posts when regular guards are absent or on leave. Must learn each post's orders quickly and work with different supervisors and clients. Reports to the area supervisor and is often the weakest link in coverage.

CCTV and alarm installation technician

Installs cameras, recorders, alarms and access control at homes, offices and sites: cabling, mounting, configuration and handover to the customer. Reports to the project engineer or service manager and works at heights and in customers' premises.

Fire system service technician

Services extinguishers, alarm panels, detectors, sprinklers and hydrants on annual maintenance contracts. Inspects, tests, refills, records and issues service reports. Reports to the service manager and works across many customer sites.

Event bag-check and entry staff

Controls entry at concerts, weddings, exhibitions and matches: checks tickets or passes, searches bags, frisks respectfully, watches crowd flow and spots banned items. Reports to the gate team leader and works for a few hours with sudden rush.
