Manager development programme for CBSE Schools: preparing coordinators and heads of department

A good teacher made coordinator is suddenly managing colleagues, parents and timetables. A short development programme gives practical tools and a peer group to learn from.

Why manager development programme matters in CBSE schools

Most coordinators in a school were the best teacher in their subject, and one day were given a lanyard and a bunch of keys. Now they must settle timetable clashes, tell an older colleague her lesson plans are late, answer an angry parent and report to the principal, with no training. Some do well by instinct; many are tired and quiet about it.

A development programme fits around the school calendar. It brings coordinators and heads of department together for short sessions, each on one real topic. They bring cases from their own section, practise a conversation and agree something to try in the next fortnight. Over a term it builds a shared way of managing that the principal can rely on.

How to set it up

  1. 1. List the hard moments

Ask coordinators to name the five situations they find hardest: giving feedback, handling a late teacher, a parent complaint, a clash between colleagues, a poor lesson observation.

  2. 2. Hold monthly sessions of ninety minutes

Same group each time. One topic, a short idea, a case from the school and a practice conversation. End with a small action to try.

  3. 3. Teach observing a lesson and giving feedback

How to watch a lesson, note facts, and talk to the teacher about what went well and what to change. Practise with a colleague.

  4. 4. Use the principal as sponsor

She attends the first and last session, asks about actions at the review and removes obstacles such as meeting overload.

  5. 5. Review after a term

Ask coordinators and their teams what has changed. Choose the next topics. See also leadership training for wider needs.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Ask coordinators what training they got when they were appointed.
  • Watch a coordinator run a department meeting and note what helps and what does not.
  • List the staff conflicts that reached the principal last term.
  • Check how many hours coordinators spend in teaching versus managing.
