Compensation benchmarking for Enterprise SaaS: senior sales, solution and delivery pay

Enterprise SaaS pays a mix of fixed pay, quota-linked pay and sometimes equity. Benchmarking helps you see whether your structure and ranges hold up where it matters: with senior sellers and solution architects.

Why compensation benchmarking matters in enterprise SaaS

Offers for senior roles are shaped by what the candidate currently earns and what a rival has just offered. Over time, two solution architects at the same level carry very different pay, and the founder carries the history in memory. When a key person resigns for a better offer, nobody can say whether the offer was unusual or normal.

Benchmarking sets a reference. You choose comparable firms by size, type and market, gather range data from credible sources and compare structure, not just totals. You look at the split between fixed and variable pay, the use of accelerators and equity. The result is a set of ranges per role and level and a clear view of outliers.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Choose roles and comparators

Select the top ten roles, such as enterprise sellers, solution architects and implementation leads. Pick comparable firms by size and market.

  2. 2. Gather data from credible sources

Use salary surveys, advisers and market knowledge. Note the date, the sample and the definitions of pay for each source.

  3. 3. Compare structure as well as totals

Look at the mix of fixed and variable pay, quota size and equity grants. A high total with a heavy variable share is a different offer.

  4. 4. Set ranges by level

Create low, middle and high points for each role and level. Place current employees and mark outliers. See compensation benchmarking.

  5. 5. Decide actions and review yearly

Choose which gaps to close now and which over time. Record the reason for each decision and set a date for the next review.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Compare pay for two solution architects of similar experience.
  • Ask the head of sales how much of senior seller pay is variable.
  • Check the age of any market data you hold.
  • List senior roles with no written range.
