HR strategy and workforce planning for B2C SaaS: hiring in step with the roadmap
In a consumer SaaS company the roadmap shifts monthly, but hiring takes months. A simple workforce plan tied to the roadmap stops panic hires and shows which roles are lasting needs.

Hiring often follows pain. A churn spike leads to a rush for a lifecycle marketer, a release delay leads to three engineers, and a support backlog leads to a batch of agents. Six months later the churn is fixed, the roadmap has moved and some roles no longer fit. People hired in a hurry feel their purpose has faded.
A workforce plan starts with the next six months of product goals, then asks what each needs: skills, number of people and how soon. It separates lasting needs from peaks, and shows where to hire, where to train and where to use short project help. It is reviewed every quarter and costs a few hours.
How to set it up
1. List the roadmap goals
Write the top five product and growth goals for the next six months in plain words. Ask the heads of product and growth to agree the list.
2. Map skills needed for each
For each goal, note the skills, the number of people and the timing. Mark which needs are lasting and which are peaks.
3. Compare with who you have
Use a simple sheet of current people and skills. Find gaps and over-supplies. Note single points of failure.
4. Choose hire, train or borrow
For each gap, decide whether to hire, train existing staff, move someone or use short project help. See HR strategy and workforce planning for formats.
5. Review every quarter
Revisit the plan after each roadmap review. Close roles that no longer match and tell candidates promptly.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Match each open role to a roadmap item and note any without one.
- List people whose skills are not used in the current plan.
- Find roles hired in a hurry in the last year and how they are doing.
- Check how many months ahead hiring is discussed today.

Questions owners ask
Six months for hiring and twelve months for direction is a common reach. Beyond that, a consumer product changes too much for useful detail.
For scarce skills such as senior engineers, a little ahead is reasonable. For roles that depend on a test result, wait for the result, or use short project help.
Write the options and what each needs in people. A shared sheet turns an argument about priorities into a discussion about trade-offs, and helps decide.
