Role design and job descriptions for Seal and O-Ring Makers: inspector grades, mould care and cavity checks
Mould cleaning, cavity checks and visual inspection often belong to nobody in particular. Written roles give each job an owner and give inspection a proper grade.

In a seal unit many tasks fall between roles. Operators load and unload but are not told they own the clean log. The toolroom repairs moulds but hears of cavity wear days late. Inspectors sort parts but have no defined limit on what they can pass. Preform cutting is left to whoever has a free hand, and weights drift. When something goes wrong, each person can honestly say it was not in their job.
Good looks like a one-page role for each position. The press operator owns loading, the clean log and a sample size check every few hours. The mould care person owns cleaning and tells the toolroom when a cavity drifts. Inspection has levels, with a test piece for each, and the duty of lot labelling is named. Shift supervisors have a short list of what they must check before a lot leaves.
How to set it up
1. Trace one lot from compound to label
Follow a lot through cutting, moulding, curing, deflashing, inspection and labelling. Write who touched it and what they decided. Gaps and overlaps show up quickly.
2. Write each role on one page
Purpose, what the person starts and checks, what they record, who they tell when something drifts. Use plain words the operators themselves would use.
3. Define inspector levels
Level one checks by sample board, level two by gauge and hardness, level three releases lots. Each has test pieces. See pay and grades for how pay can follow.
4. Name the owner of cavity and preform checks
A short routine every few hours, recorded, with a named person to tell the toolroom. Preform cutting gets a weight range and a named owner.
5. Test the pages on the floor
Read each role aloud with the person doing it. Correct what is wrong, then revisit after a month. The Seal and O-Ring Makers overview lists the wider roles.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask three people who owns the mould clean log and compare answers.
- See whether anyone has written authority to release a lot, and who.
- Check whether preform weights have a range and a named person checking them.
- Count how many roles exist only as a name, with no written duties.

Questions owners ask
Yes, if cleaning is a distinct task done by different people. If operators clean their own moulds, put the clean log in their role and give them time for it, or it will be the first thing dropped.
Three is common: sample-based visual checks, gauge and hardness checks, and lot release. Adjust to your customers' requirements. What matters is that each level has a test and a written scope.
The production head with the people doing the work. The owner reviews. Pages written by someone who never stood at the press tend to be ignored.
