Employee onboarding process for Pet daycare providers: the first month on the yard
New minders meet a yard full of dogs on day one. A short, planned start keeps them safe, keeps dogs calm and gives the centre a reason to expect them in month two.

Many daycares hand a newcomer a lead and point to the yard. By the afternoon the person has seen a squabble, been jumped on and been told off for something no one explained. Some do not return the next day. Those who stay copy whoever is nearest, whether their habits are good or bad.
Onboarding fixes the start. A first-day plan covers the gates, the rooms, the rules for handing over a dog and who to call. A buddy is named for the first month. Skills are signed off in order: calm dogs first, then busier groups, then handovers and finally supervision. A check-in on the tenth day catches doubts early.
How to set it up
1. Prepare before day one
Have the uniform, locker, a rota for the month and the buddy ready. Send a short note on what to wear and bring.
2. Walk through the centre on day one
Show the gates, rest rooms, medicine shelf, first aid and incident form. Explain the golden rules, such as closing a gate behind you every time.
3. Assign a buddy for four weeks
The buddy works beside the newcomer and signs skills as they are shown. Choose someone patient, not just someone free.
4. Introduce dogs in steps
Start with calm dogs in a small group, then widen. Add handovers and feeding in the second and third weeks.
5. Hold check-ins on day ten and day thirty
Ask what is clear, what is not and whether the work matches what was promised. Record concerns and respond. See the HR documentation process for the joining file.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask the last three joiners what they remember being told on the first day.
- Check whether each new minder had a named buddy and a signed skills list.
- Count how many left within the first thirty days and what they said.
- See if your incident form was explained to every newcomer in the first week.

Questions owners ask
Set it with a qualified professional, as terms matter. Whatever the length, use it to teach and observe, with a review before it ends.
Pick someone calm, kind and respected by the dogs. A buddy chosen only for availability can pass on poor habits.
Say it is fine to say so. Start with small, calm dogs, build confidence and decide after a few weeks whether the role suits the person.
