Workplace health, safety and wellbeing for Offset Printing Presses: guillotine controls and night cover
Guillotines, folders and plate rooms injure hands and eyes when deadlines press. Safety here means guards that are never bypassed and crews who are never alone at night.

Guillotines are fast, and under deadline pressure workers tape or bypass the two-hand controls. Plate room chemicals and rollers are handled without gloves or eye cover. At night a small crew works alone, and an injury may not be noticed for a while. A single accident stops a press and shakes the crew.
Good looks like a monthly demonstration of guard controls with real examples, a rule that controls are never bypassed and a check at shift start. The plate and ink rooms have gloves, eye cover and a labelled store. Nobody works alone at night, and anyone may stop a job on a safety concern.
How to set it up
1. Check every guillotine and folder control
Look for taped or bypassed two-hand controls and missing guards. Photograph what you find and show the crew without naming people.
2. Hold a monthly guard demonstration
Show what happens on a real machine when controls are bypassed. Make the rule clear and apply it to everybody, owner included. See health, safety and wellbeing.
3. Set up the plate and ink rooms
Gloves, eye cover, labelled containers and a wash point. Brief new staff before they enter the room alone.
4. Plan night cover so nobody is alone
At least two people on site at all times, with a working way to call help. Show who is on site on the roster so cover is visible to everyone.
5. Record injuries and near misses
What happened, where and what changed afterwards. Review the log monthly with the crew and thank the people who report, so reporting continues.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count guillotine controls that are taped, bypassed or missing a guard.
- Check whether gloves and eye cover are within reach in the plate and ink rooms.
- Look at the roster for nights and find any shift with one person.
- Read the injury and near miss log for the last three months.

Questions owners ask
Usually to save seconds under deadline. Make the safe way fast, ban bypassing for everyone and check at shift start. Ask what makes the control slow them.
Put at least two people on site, name a lead, keep a mechanic reachable and set a way to call help. Quiet hours are when small injuries go unseen.
Often yes. Take advice from a qualified professional on handling, storage and protective gear that apply to your site, and then write what your crew will actually follow.
