Learning and development process for Industrial Packaging Manufacturers: lifting, drawings and a path up
Industrial packaging staff learn lifting, welding and machine work on the job. A short, planned training routine reduces injuries and moves labourers up to skilled roles.

Training on this floor is mostly a senior showing a new hand how to lift or weld. Safe lifting is shown once and forgotten. Custom crate jobs depend on a few people who read drawings, and when one is absent, the job waits. Labourers who could move into carpentry or stitching never get the chance, because no one has time to teach. Forklift and crane operators are not retrained after near misses.
Good looks like a skill grid by role, two or three short sessions a month on one topic, and a path from general labour to a skilled seat. Drawing reading is taught to at least two more people. Forklift and crane operators are reassessed after any near miss. Records are kept per person and read when promotions are discussed.
How to set it up
1. Make a skill grid for each section
List tasks in drum, pallet, sack, welding and dispatch. Mark each person at helps, does with checks, or does alone.
2. Teach safe lifting with real items
Use the heaviest items on your floor. Show posture, team lifts and aids. Have each person repeat the method before moving the load.
3. Train two more people to read drawings
Choose from carpenters or fabricators. Use a real crate drawing and packing list. Check the result against the senior's version.
4. Offer labourers a path
Tell labourers which skilled seat is open next and what they must show. Give them time on that task weekly. See learning and development process for planning this.
5. Reassess after near misses
Retrain forklift and crane operators involved in a near miss, on the same task where it happened. Note the date and what was changed.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- List tasks where only one person works alone.
- Count labourers who moved to a skilled role in the last year.
- Check how many people can read a crate drawing.
- Read the training record for each forklift operator.

Questions owners ask
Safe lifting, forklift and crane use, welding safety and drawing reading. Start with these and add specific tasks once those are steady.
Someone who reads drawings and packing lists, with the fabricator who builds them. Train a second person so the job does not wait for one individual.
Pick someone willing, give weekly practice on the task and a clear list of what to show. Review at an agreed date. Move pay when the person shows the tasks.
