Employee onboarding process for ISO consulting: learning the standards before the first client

A new ISO consultant is often sent to a client within weeks of joining. A planned first month on the standards, the firm's writing style and a shadowed visit protects both the client and the firm's name.

Why employee onboarding process matters in ISO consulting

Most ISO consulting firms hire people who have worked in quality departments or as internal reviewers. They know a standard in parts but not the way the firm explains it, writes it up or handles an unhappy client. Without a plan the new hire reads manuals, sits beside whoever is free and meets a client in the third week.

A first month planned in advance changes that. The consultant meets the founder and the lead consultants, learns the firm's templates, watches visits at different stages and runs part of one under supervision. A senior checks the first documents closely. By week four the newcomer holds a small client list that matches their ability, and both sides know what comes next.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Prepare the joining pack

Before day one, send the firm's templates, a list of standards in use, the client list by stage and a note on who will guide the new person.

  2. 2. Spend week one on the firm's way of working

Walk through templates, review steps, how visit dates are tracked and how clients are spoken to. A senior sits through the first documents with the newcomer.

  3. 3. Shadow three visits at different stages

A gap review, a training session and a trial review. The newcomer writes up what they saw and the senior corrects it the same day.

  4. 4. Run one visit with a senior present

Give the consultant a small part to lead, such as a training hour, and hold a short review straight afterwards on what went well and what to change.

  5. 5. Check in at weeks four and twelve

Discuss the client load, the confidence level and the learning plan. Onboarding records should show what was taught and signed off.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Ask last month's joiner what they could do alone after four weeks.
  • Check that the first documents written by a new consultant were reviewed by a senior.
  • Count visits a newcomer shadowed before their own client was assigned.
  • See whether a written plan existed for the first month, or whether it was left to whoever was free.

Questions owners ask

Not fully. Begin with small, low-risk clients after shadowing and one supervised visit, and increase the load as a senior confirms the work. Early mistakes land on the firm's name.
