Attendance, shift and leave process for Bearing Manufacturers: shifts that protect gauge checks and assembly

Grinders, gauge staff and assemblers lose sharpness at the end of a long shift. Attendance and shift design in a bearing plant should protect measurement and clean habits.

Why attendance, shift and leave process matters in bearing manufacturers

When distributor orders surge before the season, overtime comes in blocks. Tired grinders make more scrap, and gauge checks are skipped at the end of a long shift. Handover between shifts is a quick word at the machine, so a drifting setting is missed. Leave is granted by whoever is asked first, and assembly staff who must rotate have no clear pattern or breaks.

A good process publishes the roster ahead and states how extra shifts are offered and rotated. Handover between shifts is written, with the state of the machine and the last gauge check. Breaks are fixed and honoured, and assemblers rotate between stations. Overtime is recorded by person and reviewed with scrap, so the owner can see when fatigue starts costing more than extra hours bring.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Record attendance and overtime in one place

One register per section with times, overtime and initials. Review it weekly. Link it to scrap by shift, so patterns of tiredness are visible.

  2. 2. Write a shift handover sheet

Machine state, last gauge check, wheel dressing time and any concern. The outgoing grinder fills it in and the incoming one signs. It takes a minute and saves a lot.

  3. 3. Fix breaks and rotation for assembly

Set break times, rotate staff between stations and keep the area easy to clean and use. Check that people take breaks. See the attendance, shift and leave process.

  4. 4. Plan seasonal overtime ahead

Look at distributor orders and last year's pattern. Offer extra shifts by a stated rule and spread them. Avoid asking the same grinders every time.

  5. 5. Give leave a clear route

A short request form, a named approver and a stated reply time. Agree peak-period expectations early, so leave is not refused without reason.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Compare scrap by shift for the last month and note the last two hours of long shifts.
  • Check whether a written handover exists between shifts.
  • List overtime by grinder for the last busy period.
  • Ask assemblers whether breaks and rotation actually happen.

Questions owners ask

It often does, because tired people skip checks and misjudge small drifts. Compare your own scrap by hours worked, and share the pattern with supervisors.
