HR process consulting for Boutique hotels: Light Routines for a Team of Twenty
A boutique hotel does not need an HR department. It needs five or six routines that are the same every time, written on a page and owned by one named person.

In a small hotel, HR happens in the corridor. The owner tells a new cook the pay, the manager approves leave by message, and a conflict between two hosts is settled over tea. This is warm and quick, yet it gives different answers on different days, and staff notice.
A light set of routines holds the warmth and removes the guesswork. Joining, probation, leave, pay dates, feedback and exit each get a one-page routine. One person owns the folder. When something new comes up, the routine is extended rather than invented again.
How to set it up
1. List what happens most often
Write the six HR events that occur monthly, such as a joining, a leave request, an advance, a complaint, a shift change and an exit.
2. Draft a one-page routine for each
Say who does what and by when, in simple words. Include what staff will see and who they can ask.
3. Name an owner
Choose one person to own the folder and answer questions, usually the general manager or an admin lead. Give them time to do it.
4. Try it for a quarter
Use the pages, note what does not fit and fix the wording. Share the result with the team at a monthly meeting.
5. Add depth only where needed
Extend into policies or training once the basics work, and not before.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Write the last five HR events and see whether each followed the same steps.
- Ask two staff how to request leave and compare their answers.
- Check where joining papers are kept and who can find them.
- Ask the owner which HR matter takes up the most of their time.

Questions owners ask
Not if they are short and in plain language. They remove uncertainty, which frees people to be warm. The tone of the pages matters as much as their content.
Someone trusted by staff and the owner, with a few hours a week. It can be the general manager, an admin lead or an outside adviser who attends monthly.
Five or six cover most days. Add one only when a situation occurs three times without a rule. More paper than that rarely helps a team of twenty.
