Employee onboarding process for Yoga Studios: the first month of a new teacher

A new yoga teacher walks into a room of regulars with their own habits. Onboarding is how the studio makes sure that first class feels like the studio, not like a stranger.

Why employee onboarding process matters in yoga studios

Many studios hire a good teacher on the strength of one trial class and hand over a batch the next week. The teacher does not know how the studio greets students, how health notes are taken, where props are kept or who to call if someone is hurt. Regulars notice the difference immediately.

A short onboarding fixes this. The new teacher meets the manager and the desk, reads the studio standard, watches one class, teaches one with the manager present, and then takes the batch. Desk staff get the same treatment for trials, packages and the opening and closing routine.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Send a welcome note before day one

Share the timetable, the batch, the studio address, parking and who will meet them. A small message calms nerves and tells the teacher the studio is organised.

  2. 2. Walk the studio and meet the desk

Show the props store, the health-note routine, the first-aid kit and the cleaning schedule. Introduce the desk staff and the senior teacher by name.

  3. 3. Watch one class, then teach with the manager present

The new teacher observes a senior teacher, then teaches a class while the manager watches. Give three points of feedback after, not a long list.

  4. 4. Share the studio standard and pay terms in writing

Hand over the one-page teaching standard and the signed pay letter. The onboarding process lists the other papers to keep.

  5. 5. Check in at one week and one month

Ask the teacher how it feels and ask two regulars for their view. Fix small problems early, such as batch timing or room set-up.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Ask your last two new teachers what they wish they had been told on day one.
  • Check whether each teacher has a signed pay letter on file.
  • Find out if every teacher knows what to do if a student is hurt in class.
  • See whether desk staff were shown how to handle a trial student before their first shift.

Questions owners ask

Usually a few days of contact spread over the first two to four weeks: a walk-through, an observed class, a supervised class and two short check-ins. Experienced teachers may move faster, but still need the studio basics.
