Recruitment process consulting for Pilates studios: trial classes and a bench of instructors who want regular hours
A studio of eight instructors cannot afford a poor hire. A trial class and a few good questions show who will look after your clients.

Studio owners often hire through word of mouth and a chat. An instructor with an impressive background joins, and a month later clients mention that her cueing is hard to follow or that she did not ask about an injury. By then she holds twelve slots and replacing her is slow.
A better process keeps the personal touch and adds a test. Ask each candidate to teach ten minutes to your team and watch cueing, correction and attention to the room. Ask what she does when a client mentions back pain, and how she communicates a change. Check references from another studio. Keep a short bench of instructors who have trialled with you and can cover.
How to set it up
1. Define the role you need
State classes, apparatus, hours, private sessions and any weekend or early slots, so candidates can judge fit.
2. Run a ten minute trial class
Candidates teach your team a short sequence. Score cueing, safety, adaptations and presence on a simple sheet.
3. Ask client-care questions
Use short scenarios about an injured client, a late arrival and a client who wants too much too fast.
4. Take references from other studios
Speak to a studio owner or senior colleague who has seen her teach, and ask about reliability and attitude.
5. Build a cover bench
Invite strong candidates who cannot join now to cover occasional classes, and keep a list with dates they have taught.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Review the last two instructor hires and note whether either taught a trial class.
- Ask clients what they value in a teacher.
- Count slots where no cover instructor exists.
- Note how long it took to fill the last vacancy.

Questions owners ask
It is fair to compensate candidates for longer trials. A short audition for your team is common without pay. Decide a rule and apply it to all.
Avoid questions on family plans, age or religion, which have no bearing on teaching. Keep to skills, availability, training history and how the person works with clients.
After training in your methods, a watched class and a conversation. Timelines vary with experience, so avoid promising a fixed date.
