Recruitment process consulting for Wholesale retail stores: hiring sellers who know the trade and loaders who stay
Wholesale stores need two very different kinds of people: sellers who understand the trade and loaders who can do heavy work all day. One hiring routine rarely fits both.

Owners often hire loaders through the people already working and sellers through whoever mentions a friend. It works until the store grows or two relatives leave together. Then a seller who knew forty buyers is gone and nobody has a list, or three loaders are absent on a truck night.
A better approach treats the two groups separately. For sellers, look for product knowledge, comfort with numbers and respect for buyers, and introduce them slowly to key accounts. For loaders, look for health, steadiness and willingness to work early. Keep a ready list for both, so a vacancy does not stop a counter or a truck.
How to set it up
1. Write two role notes
One for counter sellers and billers, one for loaders and operators. State timings, early starts, truck nights and weekly off in plain words.
2. Test sellers on the work itself
Ask them to read a buyer list, quote a bulk order and total a bill. Watch how they speak with a customer in a short role-play.
3. Meet loaders in the godown
Show the actual work and hours first. Ask about past jobs, travel time and how they feel about early starts. Honest talk reduces early exits.
4. Introduce sellers to accounts in stages
Pair a new seller with a senior for a few weeks and share buyers one by one, so relationships spread across people.
5. Keep a ready list and review hires
Hold names of good candidates and look at thirty and ninety day exits by role. Adjust the questions and the advert with what you find.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count roles that stayed vacant more than a week in the last quarter.
- Ask a recent seller how long it took to meet your top buyers.
- Check what loaders were told about early starts before they joined.
- Compare ninety day exits of sellers and loaders.

Questions owners ask
It can speed things up, but check how they treat buyers and whether they bring habits you dislike. Many owners prefer to grow sellers from billers and trainees.
Explain the hours truthfully, pay on the promised date and avoid surprise overtime. Offer a visible step to team lead or operator for those who stay.
Yes, but give them the same role note, training and review as others. Mixed standards cause resentment among non-family staff.
