Role design and job descriptions for Modular Furniture Makers: roles for files, first pieces and kits

A modular line repeats every error across hundreds of parts. Roles that say who checks a file, who signs the first piece and who counts the kit stop a small slip becoming a batch.

Why role design and job descriptions matters in modular furniture makers

A batch of wardrobes runs from one file. If the drilling file has a wrong hole spacing, every part is wrong, and it is found at the customer's end during assembly. Without clear roles, the programmer thinks the checker will catch it, the checker thinks the setter tested it, and the setter thinks the file is right because it came from the office.

Good looks like a card for each post: the programmer's file is checked by a named second person before release, the line checker signs the first piece after every colour or size change, the setter owns the changeover steps, and the packer counts the hardware kit against a list. Each person knows the one thing they must not pass.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Name who checks the file

Make a second person responsible for reading every cutting and drilling file before it goes to the machine. Put the check on a short list, such as sizes and fitting positions.

  2. 2. Give the line checker stop rights

Write that the checker may stop the line if the first piece is wrong, and who they inform. The supervisor should back this in public.

  3. 3. Describe the setter's role

Cover the changeover steps, tests, records and who covers when the setter is away. This is the post that holds the line together.

  4. 4. Write the packer's role

Include the packing list per product, the count, and the label slip with the packer's name. Check a sample of cartons.

  5. 5. Put each role on one page

Use purpose, tasks, decisions and reporting. Our role design and job descriptions work takes the same shape.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Ask three operators who is allowed to stop the line and compare answers.
  • Count missing or wrong part complaints from the last month and trace which post missed them.
  • Check whether the programmer's files are read by a second person before release.
  • See who signed the first piece on the last five colour changes.

Questions owners ask

The first piece checker and the setter, at minimum. Write it down and make clear that stopping for a real fault will be backed, even when orders are late.
