Recruitment process consulting for Lighting stores: hiring and inducting for the festival peak
A lighting store needs a stronger team for Diwali and the wedding months, then a smaller one. Hiring on time, with the right induction, decides whether the extra hands help or just crowd the counter.

Share your requirementsWhy recruitment process consulting matters in lighting stores
Most lighting stores hire when the rush has already begun. A candidate walks in, is hired the same day and is on the floor by evening, with no idea where the batten holders are kept. The senior salesmen are too busy to teach, so the new person watches customers leave, and often leaves too before the season ends.
A better process starts two months ahead. Count how many hands the peak needs, write a short role note, look at people from electrical trades, hardware shops and retail, and arrange a half-day induction before the first rush. Choose a few to stay beyond the season, so the best are not lost every year.
How to set it up
1. Count the peak from last year
List the busiest weeks, the number of customers served per salesman and where queues formed. This gives the number and the roles, such as counter, godown and delivery.
2. Write a one-page role note
Duties, hours, pay arrangement and what the person must learn in the first week. Share it with candidates so expectations are clear.
3. Look in the right places
Ask staff for referrals, approach electrical diploma students, check hardware and electrical shop assistants and keep a list of good seasonal staff from previous years.
4. Run a short practical interview
Ask the candidate to explain the difference between two fittings, handle a role-played return and show basic arithmetic for a quotation.
5. Induct before the rush
Half a day on the stock layout, five common questions and the return rule. Name a buddy for each new person. Review at the end of week one with the employee onboarding process.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many of last year's seasonal staff were hired in the last two weeks before the rush.
- Ask the senior salesmen what a new hire needs on day one and check whether they get it.
- List the sources that gave you your best staff in the past.
- Find out how many seasonal hires could be kept on if the store wanted them.

Questions owners ask
About two months before the peak, so there is time to interview, induct and practise. Hiring in the last week usually means crowded counters and untrained staff.
Look at electrical and hardware shop assistants, electrical diploma students, referrals from your own staff and people who worked with you in earlier seasons. A practical test matters more than the CV.
Keep a few who learnt well and fit the team, if the quiet months can support them. Agree the arrangement clearly at the start so there is no surprise on either side.
