Performance management process for Courier operators: daily and monthly measures for pick-up and delivery staff

Courier executives see their numbers every day. A fair performance process adds quality, honest status entries and a monthly talk so people are not judged on parcel count alone.

Why performance management process matters in courier operators

Most courier branches post a daily board of parcels delivered. It tells executives that count matters and little else. Some skip hard addresses, mark attempts they never made or hold cash. Supervisors then spend time chasing figures instead of coaching.

A better process puts a few measures on one sheet: delivered, attempts, customer ratings, cash deposited and honest status. It sets a monthly talk between supervisor and executive. Hub staff get their own sheet with sorting accuracy and mis-sorts. The point is to help people do better, not to catch them out.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Pick the measures for each role

For executives, use delivered, valid attempts, rating and cash. For hub sorters, use accuracy and speed. Keep to four measures each.

  2. 2. Design one daily sheet

Make it easy to read at a glance. Include yesterday's result and the week so far.

  3. 3. Check the data for fairness

Compare routes and areas. A dense route and a spread-out one cannot carry the same count. Adjust targets by area.

  4. 4. Hold a monthly one to one

The supervisor sits with each executive for ten minutes, discusses results, the hardest days and one thing to improve. Note actions.

  5. 5. Link recognition to the full picture

Reward quality and steadiness, not only highest count. See performance management for design notes.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Ask an executive what their target is and how it was set.
  • Compare the number of parcels per executive by route type.
  • Look for status entries that do not match customer calls.
  • Check how many one to one talks happened last month.

Questions owners ask

Study the area, the density of stops and the time per stop, then set targets by route type. Review twice a year, and when a major shipper joins or leaves.
