Recruitment process consulting for Sportswear stores: finding associates who know sport and can serve
A sportswear store needs people who can talk about running shoes, team kit and gym wear, and also bill a customer calmly. A hiring process with a practical round finds them better than a CV.

Sportswear stores often hire in a rush before a sale or a new season and take whoever is nearest. Some turn out to be keen athletes who cannot handle billing, and others handle billing but know nothing about the products. Both leave within months, and the manager starts again.
A planned process begins with a clear brief for each role: associate, fit specialist, promoter, billing. It follows with a short practical round where the candidate helps a mock customer and a mock return. Hiring dates are worked back from the season. Imagine a store that starts looking for weekend staff in February for the April tournaments. It has choice, and it has time to train.
How to set it up
1. Write a one-page brief per role
State the work, hours, weekend duty, product areas and what a good person looks like. Use plain words and avoid long lists of degrees.
2. Work back from the season
Mark the dates of tournaments, the new-year rush and brand events. Start hiring eight to ten weeks ahead of the first peak so training does not eat into selling.
3. Source from the places your customers are
Running clubs, gyms, colleges, local teams and your own customers' referrals. Ask current staff for names. A post on a college board often reaches the right people.
4. Run a practical selection round
Give the candidate a mock customer who asks about shoes for walking or cricket gear for a child. Watch listening, honesty and manner. Add a short billing exercise.
5. Agree the offer and a trial period
Explain base, incentive, weekend duty and the learning path. Put it in writing. The recruitment process work sets the steps for each role.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many of your last ten hires left within six months.
- Ask the manager what the best associate did in the interview.
- Check how long it took to fill the last weekend vacancy.
- See whether candidates are told about weekend duty before they join.

Questions owners ask
Not only. Sporting people bring interest and credibility, but you still need patience, billing and people skills. Judge each candidate on how they handle the mock customer.
Before. Hire and train early so the person can serve by the first peak. Hiring in the middle of a rush leaves them untrained and your best staff distracted.
Two steps are often enough: a short conversation with the manager and a practical round. Add a talk with the owner only for fit specialists and assistant managers.
