Attendance, shift and leave process for Household Plastics Makers: three shifts, night cover and leave
Moulding machines run in three shifts because stopping wastes material. Attendance, handover and leave rules decide whether nights make good parts or only many.

The best setters work days, so nights depend on operators unsure what to change when a defect appears. Handover between shifts is a quick word, and the next shift finds a mould half warm with a problem nobody mentioned. Absence after pay day or a festival leaves a machine without an operator, and the unit starts a new colour with a helper at the controls.
A simple process fixes much of this. A roster with a named setter or senior operator on every shift. A written handover note with the mould, colour, settings and open faults. A leave calendar that spreads setters across shifts. A short cover rule for absence, saying who is called and who steps in. Review absence by shift and day each month.
How to set it up
1. Name a capable person on every shift
Check the roster for each shift and name a setter or senior operator. If nights lack one, pair an operator with a senior setter on call.
2. Use a one-page handover note
The leaving shift writes mould, colour, material, settings, rejects and faults. The incoming shift reads and signs. Keep the notes for a month.
3. Write a cover rule for absence
Say who is called first, who steps in and when a machine is stopped. Share it with supervisors so decisions do not depend on mood.
4. Keep a leave calendar by shift
Spread leave for setters so no shift is left without one. See the attendance, shift and leave process.
5. Review absence patterns monthly
Look at which shifts and days have the most absence, especially after pay day and festivals, and plan cover for them.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many night shifts last month had a setter or senior operator present.
- Compare rejects between day and night shifts.
- Look at your last ten handover notes and see which fields were blank.
- List the days with most absence in the last quarter and what preceded them.

Questions owners ask
Not always. A capable senior operator with a setter on call and a clear checklist can be enough. Review rejects to see if it works.
Plan for it. Agree festival leave early, keep a call-back list and avoid scheduling long colour or mould changes on likely absence days.
Yes. A few minutes of writing saves hours of guesswork for the next shift. Keep it short and use the same fields on every shift so it is read.
