Compensation benchmarking for Management Colleges: pay for core and visiting faculty

A management college loses teachers to companies and to rival institutes. Benchmarking pay for core faculty, visiting faculty and support teams shows where you stand and where a change would help most.

Why compensation benchmarking matters in management colleges

Most management colleges set pay from history, from what the previous teacher received or from what a new hire asks. Core faculty then discover colleagues earning more for the same cadre. Visiting faculty are paid per session at rates that were fixed years ago, and the best of them stop coming when a company offers a training contract at a higher fee.

Benchmarking builds a picture from local sources: peer colleges, advertised posts and conversations with recruiters. It compares cadre by cadre, adds the value of research time, consulting freedom and benefits, and shows the gap. The college decides where to match and where to rely on other attractions.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Define the roles to compare

Core cadres, programme heads, visiting faculty, placement and admissions staff. Group posts with similar duties.

  2. 2. Gather local market information

Speak to peer colleges, recruiters and teachers who have changed jobs. Note pay elements, not only totals. See compensation benchmarking.

  3. 3. Compare with your own pay

Place your figures beside the market for each group and mark the gaps, both below and above.

  4. 4. Decide where to match and where not

Choose which groups are critical to retain, and explain the reasoning. Agree what non-cash factors you will emphasise.

  5. 5. Write the pay ranges and review yearly

Publish ranges for each cadre in plain terms and review once a year.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • List the five hardest posts to fill in the last two years.
  • Compare the pay of two teachers of the same cadre.
  • Check the last revision date of visiting faculty rates.
  • Ask a recent leaver what the new employer offered.

Questions owners ask

Use several indirect sources: advertised ranges, recruiters, new joiners and exit conversations. Treat each as an estimate, look for agreement across sources and write down how confident you are.
