Recruitment process consulting for Engineering Colleges: finding faculty for every subject
An engineering college hires teachers subject by subject, and the pool for some subjects is small. A process built around subjects, not generic advertisements, fills more seats before the term starts.

Many colleges advertise once a year, shortlist on degree and years, and hold a demonstration class that tells little about the person. Subjects such as VLSI, structural analysis or data engineering draw few applicants, and the post stays vacant until a visiting teacher is found at short notice.
A better process starts from the timetable. It lists subjects, sections and hours, marks which are hard to staff, and begins looking early. It uses several sources: recent postgraduates, practitioners in industry, retired staff and teachers from other colleges. It states the workload and growth path honestly in the offer.
How to set it up
1. List the subjects that need a teacher
From the timetable, name each subject, number of sections and lab hours, and mark the scarce ones. This sets the order in which you look.
2. Write a short profile for each post
Qualification, subject strengths, lab skills, guidance duties and whether the post is regular, contract or visiting. Keep essentials separate from nice-to-haves.
3. Open several channels early
Use department networks, alumni working in industry, other colleges and a posted notice. Start before the semester ends. See recruitment process consulting.
4. Test the teaching, not just the talk
A short class on a topic from the syllabus, followed by questions from the head of department and a junior member. Note how the person handles a student question.
5. State workload and path in the offer
Hours, lab duties, guidance load, review point and what moves a person to the next cadre, so the new teacher knows the job on day one.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- List the subjects that were taught by visiting staff last year and why.
- Check how many weeks each vacancy stayed open.
- Ask the head of one department what they would change about the last hire.
- Read your latest advertisement and see whether it describes the real workload.

Questions owners ask
It depends on the subject. For project-led and design subjects it helps a great deal. For foundation subjects, teaching skill matters more. Decide this per post and say so in the profile.
Begin as soon as the next timetable draft shows a gap, which is often a semester ahead. Scarce subjects can take several months to fill, so a late start leaves you with a visiting teacher.
Give every candidate the same short topic and the same panel questions, and use a plain scoring sheet. Ask students' typical questions so you see how the person explains, not just what they know.
