Attendance, shift and leave for Solvent Manufacturers: handover, permits and tanker timing

A solvent plant needs the next shift to know what is open: permits, tank states and half-filled drums. Attendance and shift design give that handover time and keep cover steady on nights and festivals.

Why attendance, shift and leave matters in solvent manufacturers

If the roster gives no overlap, the outgoing supervisor leaves with the permit in his pocket. The next shift starts hot work near a tank that was not drained. Tanker traffic arrives through the day with no fixed slot, so crews are pulled from tasks to load. Night and festival absence leaves the column with one operator and a helper, and nobody has decided the minimum crew. Drum filling workers are kept in the same spot for a whole shift because no one has made a rotation.

A plant that handles this well gives each shift an overlap and a fixed handover board. Tanker slots are booked, so the loading crew is rostered to them. Minimum crews are set for column, tank farm and filling, and leave is planned around them. Festival and night cover is agreed early. Drum filling has a rotation in the roster, not left to the supervisor.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Add a handover overlap to the roster

Set a time when outgoing and incoming supervisors meet at the board. Include open permits, tank status and drums in progress. See the attendance, shift and leave process.

  2. 2. Book tanker slots with dispatch

Give each truck a time, and roster the loading crew to the slots, so that other work is not interrupted at random.

  3. 3. Set a minimum crew for column, tank farm and filling

Write the fewest trained people each area may run with, name who can fill each place and plan leave around that number.

  4. 4. Agree night and festival cover in advance

Publish the rota weeks before, state the overtime rule and give rest days afterwards. Use volunteers first.

  5. 5. Put a rotation for drum filling in the roster

Move people out of the vapour area at set times and record it. Treat it as part of the shift plan, not a favour.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Look at last week's handover records and see whether open permits were listed.
  • Count tanker arrivals last week and how many were outside booked slots.
  • List shifts last month that ran below a safe crew and what was done.
  • Check how long drum filling workers stayed in one place in a typical shift.

Questions owners ask

Long enough to walk the board and the tank farm together. Test it by asking the incoming supervisor whether they know every open permit when the meeting ends.
