HR reporting and analytics for CA firms: seeing strain before people leave
Partners watch revenue and realisation closely, but few see how stretched the team is. A small monthly people report shows hours, leave and exits by team before they become a resignation.

Share your requirementsWhy HR reporting and analytics matters in CA firms
Most CA firms track fees and collections in detail and people almost not at all. A team may work late for six weeks, and the partner only learns when a senior gives notice. The signs were in the data: long days, unused leave, repeated rework.
A good report is short. One page, updated monthly, with a handful of numbers that partners can read in minutes and use in a meeting. It does not need software, only a consistent way to collect the entries.
How to set it up
1. Pick six numbers
For example hours by team, leave taken and pending, trainee rotation status, open vacancies, exits in the year and review completion.
2. Decide who collects each
Name one person for each number and set a date each month. Keep the method simple enough to survive the busy season.
3. Build a one page view
Put the numbers on a single sheet with last month beside this month, and a line of comment from the manager.
4. Discuss it at the partners' meeting
Give ten minutes to the people report. Ask what it says about workload, risk of exits and where support is needed.
5. Check and refine each quarter
Drop numbers nobody uses and add one when a question keeps coming up. Link to HR process consulting if bigger changes are needed.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Check whether anyone can say how many hours a team averaged last month.
- Look at unused leave balances by person.
- Count exits in the last year by team and by grade.
- Ask a partner what people information they wish they had.

Questions owners ask
No. A shared sheet that managers update monthly is enough to begin. Choose tools later, once you know what you use.
Hours by team against leave taken. It shows overload early, before anyone complains. Add exits and trainee progress as the monthly habit forms and partners start to use the page.
Not if you explain the purpose and share the findings. Show that the data is used to balance work and support people, and keep the focus on team patterns.
