Recruitment process consulting for Tractor dealers: hiring field sellers and technicians before the rush
A tractor dealer who starts hiring when the season begins gets rushed hires who leave after one rush. The process should find the right people in the quiet months and have them ready by sowing.

Tractor dealers hire in three pools. Field sales executives who know the area and can speak to farmers. Technicians who can work on engines and hydraulics. Delivery and showroom staff who deal with paperwork and customers. Each pool is found differently, and the best candidates are often those already known to farmers or working for another dealer or a repair garage.
Most dealers hire in a hurry, often after a resignation in the month before sowing. Time is lost when the job is written loosely, the interview is only a chat and the new person starts without being shown the villages, the models or the paperwork. A calm hiring plan, set months ahead, fixes most of that.
How to set it up
1. Write the role in plain words
For each role list the area, the tractor models, the tasks and the targets. A field seller covering a block of villages needs a different profile from a showroom seller.
2. Plan hiring from the calendar
Count the people you need for the sowing and harvest weeks, and start looking three months earlier, using referrals from your own staff and farmers.
3. Test the real work
Give technicians a short practical task on a tractor and sellers a role-play with a farmer who is comparing prices. The role design and job descriptions work supports this.
4. Check how they fit the area
Ask where the person lives, which villages they know and whether they can travel by bike or vehicle on poor roads.
5. Plan the first weeks
Name a senior who will take the new person to villages or through the workshop, and decide what they should handle alone by the end of the first month.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many of last year's hires were made in the month before sowing.
- Ask your best field seller how they found the job and what made them stay.
- Check whether any technician was hired without a practical test on a tractor.
- See what happened to the last three people who left within six months, and at which stage the fit went wrong.

Questions owners ask
Often through farmers, agri-input shops, finance agents and your own staff. People who already know the villages and are trusted by farmers start faster than those who have to learn the area.
Yes. A short task, such as tracing a simple fault or doing a standard service, tells you more than an interview. Have your senior technician watch and note what he sees.
Long enough to recruit, train and place someone before the first rush. Many dealers aim for about three months, but use your own calendar and past experience to decide.
