Attendance, shift and leave process for Aerospace CNC Parts Makers: night cover and fair leave
Five-axis machines run long hours, and night cover has less technical support. A clear shift, handover and leave process keeps the senior skill on site where machines need it.

Without a set process, shifts grow by habit. The senior setter goes home after day shift and the night operator is afraid to stop a machine, so small faults grow into scrap. Handover between shifts is a quick chat, and the drawing revision at the machine is not confirmed. Leave is granted by whichever manager is asked, so the same two setters are off together. People on nights feel forgotten and pay is unclear for added responsibility.
Good looks like a roster that places one capable setter on each night shift with authority to stop a machine, and a written handover sheet covering jobs, revisions, tool life and open faults. Leave is planned so that no skill group is thin on a shift. Night pay and responsibility are stated and paid on time. Supervisors review the roster monthly against scrap and downtime to see whether the pattern is working.
How to set it up
1. Map each shift against skills
For each shift list who can set, prove, inspect and program. Mark shifts where one absence would stop a machine.
2. Name a night lead and give him authority
One senior setter per night shift, with written authority to stop a machine and a list of hourly checks. Pay the responsibility visibly. See attendance, shift and leave process.
3. Use a written handover sheet
Jobs running, drawing revision, tool life, open faults and who to call. Both shifts sign. Keep it to one page.
4. Plan leave by skill group
A shared calendar that shows how many setters and inspectors are off each day, with a rule on minimum cover. Approve quickly outside crowded periods.
5. Review the roster monthly
Compare shift patterns with scrap, downtime and complaints. Ask night staff what they need. Change one thing at a time and record it.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Look at who is on site after day shift ends and what they are allowed to decide.
- Read three recent handover notes and check whether the drawing revision is stated.
- Count days last quarter when two setters were on leave together.
- Compare scrap and downtime on night shifts with day shifts in the last month.

Questions owners ask
Many shops pay an allowance for night work and for responsibility. Decide it openly and confirm the payment rules with a qualified professional. Extra pay with no authority attached does not fix the real problem.
Use one shared calendar, a rule on minimum cover per skill group and one approver. Tell staff the rule at joining and before busy periods, so approvals feel fair.
Check pay, growth and support. Offer it with a visible grade step and a day off rotation. Rotate the role among capable setters if one person cannot carry it.
