Recruitment process consulting for Recycling Units: finding sorters, machine operators and shift leads
A recycling unit hires in volume for sorting and in skill for balers and forklifts. Each needs a different search, and the shift lead needs a third.

Sorters are usually found by word of mouth, by contractors or at the gate on the day. That works until a bad month. Then the line is short, the hires are untested and the best sorters are poached by the unit next door. Machine operators and shift leads are harder, because the skills are learned on the job and few people hold them.
A recruitment routine separates the three needs. For sorters, a steady local source and a trial day. For operators, a practical test and a reference from a previous yard. For shift leads, a look at how the person handles people, not only speed. It saves repeat searches and reduces injury caused by untrained hands.
How to set it up
1. Define each role in a page
Write what a sorter, a baler operator, a forklift driver and a shift lead do and the signs of a good one. Use role descriptions for the formal version.
2. Build a local source
Keep a list of nearby people, past workers and referrals, and contact them before a peak. Offer a trial day on the line with pay.
3. Test machine skills in practice
Ask applicants to show a baler or forklift task under supervision, and check a reference from a previous employer.
4. Select shift leads with care
Interview for handling disputes, giving instructions and keeping records, and ask for an example of when they settled a quarrel.
5. Follow up after joining
Speak to each hire at week two and week six, and note what the search could have told them better.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count sorters who left within the first month and where they were hired from.
- List the people able to run each machine and the backup for each.
- Ask recent shift leads how they were chosen.
- Check how long it takes you to replace a baler operator.

Questions owners ask
Ask your own sorters, nearby yards, transport firms and local training centres. Test practical skills with a supervised task and check a reference where possible.
Not by speed alone. Look at how they treat others, keep records and settle quarrels. Try them as acting lead with some support before confirming.
Yes if it is short, paid and clearly described. It tells both sides whether the work suits them before commitments are made.
