Performance management process for Environmental Laboratories: reviews that cover accuracy, turnaround and growth
A lab that rewards speed alone invites mistakes. A review that looks at accuracy, turnaround and learning keeps results sound and people growing.

Share your requirementsWhy performance management process matters in environmental laboratories
Lab managers see output easily: reports issued, samples completed. Accuracy and care are harder to see until a client queries a result. If reviews weigh only volume, analysts hurry, errors are hidden and small slips become large ones.
A review process with a few agreed measures, such as accuracy checks, turnaround against plan and learning of new methods, and a regular conversation keeps the focus on quality. It also gives analysts and samplers a record to point to when asking for growth, and gives the manager something firm to say when a pay conversation comes.
How to set it up
1. Agree measures for each role
Choose three or four for analysts, such as accuracy in checks, turnaround against promise and records kept. Choose others for samplers, such as sample condition and timeliness.
2. Hold short quarterly talks
A twenty minute conversation between the analyst and the section head on work done, difficulties and learning. Note two actions.
3. Make error reporting safe
Treat an honestly reported error as information, not as a mark against the person. Review the cause and share the lesson.
4. Do an annual review with evidence
Use the competence record, quarterly notes and client feedback to rate and decide pay and growth. Share the result in person.
5. Link learning to review
Agree one method or skill to learn in the next year, and check progress next time. Tie it to the career path.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask analysts whether they would report their own error and what would happen.
- Check the last set of reviews for any measure other than volume.
- Count quarterly talks held against planned.
- See whether review outcomes affected pay or growth in any visible way.

Questions owners ask
Accuracy checks, turnaround against promise, quality of records, learning of methods and help given to colleagues. Choose a few and explain them to everyone.
Use sample condition on arrival, timeliness, labelling and feedback from the lab and clients. Account for travel and weather that they cannot control.
They should inform it along with grade, market and the lab's means. Explain the link clearly so that people understand how effort and skill are recognised.
