Employee onboarding process for Enterprise software companies: a first quarter for consultants and support engineers
A new consultant may need months before running a customer task alone. A planned first quarter shortens the time and keeps early frustration from turning into early exits.

Enterprise products are broad, and customers have their own processes layered on top. A new hire may be handed documents, a test environment and a name, then told to shadow. Weeks pass without a clear picture of progress. Some learn quickly through force of personality, while others feel lost and quiet.
A planned first quarter separates three streams: the product, the customer and the company. It sets small goals for each month, assigns a mentor, includes time at a real customer site with a senior person and checks understanding with simple tasks. Support engineers follow a similar path with ticket practice.
How to set it up
1. Prepare before the first day
Set up access, a test environment, a mentor and a learning plan for the quarter.
2. Teach the product in layers
Start with the core flows, then modules in order of customer use, with short tasks after each. Avoid long lectures.
3. Shadow at a customer
Place the person with a senior consultant or support lead on real work, with a debrief after each session.
4. Introduce company norms
Travel rules, escalation, documentation habits and how to speak to customers, covered in the first weeks. Policies and governance holds these.
5. Review at thirty, sixty and ninety days
Meet with the mentor and manager, check tasks done alone and agree next steps.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask the last two hires how they knew they were progressing.
- Check whether a written learning plan exists for consultants and for support.
- See how many mentors had time set aside for the role.
- Look at how long it took for a new hire to handle a customer task alone.

Questions owners ask
They need ticket practice, escalation rules and product basics, often with shadowing on the live desk. Shift patterns also need a clear introduction.
A respected colleague with time and patience, ideally not the line manager. Give them space in their workload, or mentoring will be squeezed out.
Talk openly, identify the gap, adjust the plan and add support. Many struggles come from unclear tasks or an overloaded mentor, not from the person.
