Employee onboarding process for Custom software companies: getting a developer onto a client project in the first month
A new developer in a project company is usually needed on a client team within days. Onboarding that explains the company, the codebase and the client calmly makes the first month productive.

Share your requirementsWhy employee onboarding process matters in custom software companies
New developers are often thrown into a project because the client is waiting. They get a laptop, a repository link and a channel. Questions about coding standards, how to raise a defect, who to ask about requirements and how the timesheet works are answered piece by piece, or not at all. The first fortnight is slow and confidence suffers.
A short onboarding plan fixes that. It gives the person a buddy, a clear first task, the project background, the company's working norms and a check at the end of each week. It also tells the project lead what to prepare. Shared practice cuts the cost of a mistaken start.
How to set it up
1. Prepare before day one
Ready the laptop, access, repository, project brief and a buddy. The lead names a first small task.
2. Cover the company basics on day one
Hours, leave, timesheet habit, who to approach and what the company expects on communication with clients.
3. Walk through the project
Give the client background, architecture sketch, coding standards and how work is tracked. Allow questions.
4. Hold weekly check-ins in month one
Fifteen minutes with the lead on progress and blockers, and a short chat with HR at two weeks.
5. Close the month with a review
Agree what went well, what is unclear and what the person should learn next. Feed it into the skill matrix.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask the last two joiners how long it took to deliver their first useful change.
- Check whether every project has a written brief a newcomer can read.
- See how often buddies were named and had time set aside.
- Look at whether new joiners filled timesheets correctly in month one.

Questions owners ask
About a month with a light plan, plus a three month check. The pace depends on the project's complexity, so the lead should adjust it for each person.
Keep the first day short and focused on essentials, assign a buddy and a small task, and complete the wider orientation over the following weeks.
They need less on technology but just as much on your norms, client context and expectations. Check their pace and adjust, rather than skipping steps.
